“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen”(NIV)
“to loose the chains of injustice”
I hadn’t really set my sights that high thank you. I was more thinking about being better than I am and reading the Word some more and writing and talking with people. I was exploring ways to serve Him more and…
“and untie the cords of the yoke
To set the oppressed free
And break every yoke?”
And I repeat, “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen”?
Well, it was not the kind of fasting I chose, no.
“Is it not to share your food with the hungry
And provide the poor wanderer shelter.
“when you see the naked, to clothe him,
And not to turn away from your own flesh and blood.”
Yes, Isaiah gets specific. I’m not talking about feeding-the-homeless and providing-them-with-shelter specific, but purpose specific. Isaiah lets us know that fasting has a purpose and that purpose, is service. That purpose is much bigger than we are and is not as simple as saying “I serve Him”.
No, Isaiah gets specific. I’m not talking about clothing-the-naked specific, but freedom-and-justice specific. Isaiah lets us know that fasting has a purpose and that purpose is service. That purpose is bigger than we can do all at once and is not as simple as saying “I serve others in His name”.
Yes, Isaiah gets specific. I am talking about millions of God’s people suffering under yokes of injustice and Isaiah gets specific when he asks, “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen?” and encourages us to begin by breaking bread with one who is hungry, sheltering one who is homeless, clothing one who is naked.
Yes, Isaiah gets specific. Because injustice and oppression are born from a denial of the most basic of human needs and we must fast with purpose.
We don’t know who will come to us hungry and what they may be hungry for. We don’t know who might need shelter and of what kind. We don’t know who might be naked and vulnerable and need us to cover them.
Is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen? Perhaps it isn’t, but I am sure it could be.
