Great Father (a prayer for the first week of Lent)
O, Great Father
You are too wonderful for us,
Your majesty, your might, your power
Creator God, limitless God.
And so, we back away from you.
We can’t grasp the depth of your love. We can’t understand that you love us fiercely, that you love us jealously, that you love us so much that you sing over us.
And so we make you smaller. We build our little buildings. We hold our little, excellent services and events. And we wait for you to do the little things that we’ve imagined. When all the time you long to do mighty things, God sized things, if we would just act like we believe what we say we believe, if we would just plunge in and let the waters swallow us instead of mincing cautiously along the edges.
Please forgive us for offering up our little creations, for gathering in our little communities week after week and blinding our eyes to the fields of harvest because they seem too big for us, because we don’t see how we can make a difference, for settling for our little “successes”.
We’ve offered the world a program, a method, a club. When all the time they are longing for You. They are desperate for the God who sees, the God who loves them fiercely. They are hungry for communion with the Spirit of God and we offer them a scripture reading, three songs, a prayer and a three point sermon.
Forgive our doubts.
Help us to truly see.
Help us believe in truth.
Forgive us for making this so much about us and our needs and our comfort. Open our eyes to your splendor and your majesty, Great God, so that we may turn and be healed.
Amen and Amen.
Anna – you communicated so clearly the Spirit of this past week.

Thanks Tom. That means a lot to me.
When I met you this week, I knew you were Jon’s friend Tom, but didn’t make the connection to this blog until today.

I think I will be coming back to this prayer often in the days ahead.
